‘You Need to Know’ wins third award

Our womb cancer campaign, ‘You Need to Know’, in partnership with leading gynae charity Eve Appeal and communications agency AKT Health, has been recognised once again for the positive impact it is having on improving health outcomes and reducing health inequalities.

‘You Need to Know’, which aims to improve early diagnosis of womb cancer for Black African, Black Caribbean, and South Asian women, was a worthy winner of the Excellence in Public Health Communications category at the Communiqué Awards, which took place on 4 July.

It was a tough category with lots of competition. The judges recognised the impact of the campaign and said: “It had a true-to-purpose and forward-thinking approach, which showed a solid effort at implementation, seeking engagement and reaching people.

“The campaign met a real need, showing true value and importance, while going above and beyond to gain strong outcomes, as well as showing significant intent to gain quality, validated metrics.”

This award is the third one so far that the campaign has won, adding to the success of the bronze award at the PM Society awards in the Diversity & Inclusion in Creative Communications category, and the Patient and Carer prize in the category 'People affected by cancer’, as voted for by patients at the Cancer Research UK Early Diagnosis Conference.

Sherrice Weekes, Project Manager for North East London Cancer Alliance, said: “We are delighted that this campaign has won a third award, as it shows what can be achieved through effective collaboration both with partner organisations and with the communities you are trying to reach.

"The campaign materials feature three local women who attended our first focus group, which helped to co-produce the communications strategy, messages and assets. Their enthusiasm, warmness, and passion has helped make sure that our messages are right for our target audience and is helping to save lives, so a big thank you goes to them.

“We hope that the increased profile of the campaign through winning these awards will help others come forward and seek life-saving help if they have symptoms. The main symptom of womb cancer is bleeding after the menopause and anyone experiencing this should contact their GP immediately."

North East London Cancer Alliance and Eve Appeal have also been delivering interactive awareness sessions to community groups, speaking to over 300 women and people with a womb about the key messages of the campaign.

Building on this success, the campaign is gearing up to move into its second phase, which will look at raising awareness of ovarian cancer.
