Community Liver Health Checks

Community liver health checks

Liver disease often has no symptoms until it is advanced. We want to diagnose it as early as possible to give people the best chance of recovery. More than 2 million people in the UK are living with liver disease, making it the fifth leading cause of death.

Our community liver health checks (CLCHCs) provide a quick, painless test called a fibroscan. This non- invasive scan, delivered by trained nurses, checks for inflammation and scarring in the liver.

Because 90% of liver disease is preventable, early diagnosis allows people to:

  • Access specialist treatments while they are most effective.
  • Make lifestyle changes to protect their liver health.
Who can have a liver check?

Community liver health checks are now focused on people at higher risk of liver disease. You may be eligible if you are aged 35-70 and have one or more of the following:

  • A history of Hepatitis C or current Hepatitis C
  • Hepatitis B (not currently under the care of a liver team)
  • Fatty liver (MASLD)
  • Excessive alcohol consumption or a history of alcohol dependence
  • Previous injecting drug use
  • obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease

People without risk factors will not be invited for a scan.

Self-refer for a Liver Health Check

If you have any of the risk factors above, you can self- refer to our community clinic at Mile End Hospital. To self- refer, please email: bartshealth.communityliverhealth@nhs.net with the following details:

  • Subject line: Mile End clinic self- refer
  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Risk factor(s)
  • NHS Number (if known)
  • Contact details

Please note: Your GP will be notified of your results unless you specifically request otherwise.

Invite the liver Health Van to your event

Are you a GP practice, health charity, or organisation running a health event for people at risk of liver disease? you can now invite our Community Liver Health Can to attend.

At events, we offer the same simple, non invasive test to eligible people ages 35-70. To request the van, email: bartshealth.communityliverhealth@nhs.net with your event details (date and location). We plan well in advance, so please contact us early.
