Promoting Early Detection: Community Event Encourages Cancer Awareness and Screening

More than 65 women attended a recent community cancer awareness event focused on increasing understanding of bowel, prostate, cervical and breast cancer screening. The event, organised by People Street, exceeded expectations, creating a welcoming space for open conversations about cancer, early detection, and the importance of screening.

The event addressed several common misconceptions that can sometimes prevent people from seeking help, including fears that cancer is contagious or concerns that smear tests may cause incontinence. By providing clear, evidence-based information, the event helped reassure attendees and encouraged informed conversations about health.

The day proved highly productive, with the North East London Cancer Alliance team on hand to raise awareness and support attendees. The team was pleased to report that 14 bowel screening kit requests were made during the event, including eight from the Bangladeshi women and six from Somali women. This highlights the importance of bringing cancer awareness directly into communities to help reduce barriers to screening and support earlier diagnosis.

Feedback from attendees was positive, may women shared appreciation for informative sessions, practical advice, and on - site health checks, highlighting how valuable it was to receive guidance in a trusted and supportive environment.

Nimo Mohamed, Director of Outreach and Engagement at People Street, reflected on the success of the event saying "The day was productive, and we are grateful for your commitment to community health and wellbeing. Your contributions made a significant impact"

Events like this play a vital role in improving cancer awareness and ensuring communities have access to trusted information and support. By working closely with local partners, we can continue to reduce barriers to screening, encourage earlier diagnosis, and support better health outcomes for all.
