North East London Cancer Alliance Supports Health & Humanity Event in Barking and Dagenham
On Thursday 26 February, North East London Cancer Alliance (NELCA) was invited to attend the Health & Humanity event hosted in Barking and Dagenham. The event brought together local partners to support rough sleepers and asylum seekers within the community.
The day provided attendees with access to a range of free services, including hot meals, haircuts, showers, health checks and the opportunity to speak with a doctor. The atmosphere was busy and welcoming, with many people socialising and making full use of the facilities available.
The NELCA stand was well attended throughout the day, particularly by men seeking information about prostate cancer. One gentleman shared that both his father and brother had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The conversation and information provided served as an important reminder for him to arrange his own checks. Moments like this highlight the value of taking cancer awareness and early diagnosis messages directly into the community.
Attendees were also encouraged to join NELCA’s WhatsApp channel to stay informed about cancer awareness, screening and local support services. A total of 12 people scanned the QR code to join on the day. However, some attendees were unable to access the channel due to limited internet connectivity, highlighting ongoing digital access barriers faced by vulnerable groups.
Overall, the event was a valuable opportunity to network with local health professionals and community organisations, while reinforcing the importance of proactive outreach in reaching underserved communities across North East London.
