NELCA Team Engages Students and Staff in HPV Vaccine Awareness at Barking and Dagenham College
The North East London Cancer Alliance (NELCA) team visited Barking and Dagenham college, setting up an information stall on a regular school day to raise awareness about the HPV Vaccine. The team aimed to educate students on the importance of the vaccine and explain how they can still access it if they missed their dose at school.
Throughout the day, students stopped by to learn more, with some already familiar with the HPV Vaccine and others encountering the information for the first time. The team's presence sparked curiosity and conversation, helping to dispel misconceptions and ensure young people had accurate, accessible guidance.
In an unexpected but welcome development, the stall also drew significant interest from school staff. Many told the team they had children of eligIble age and appreciated the opportunity to gather clear information to take home and support decision making.
A standout moment came when a student who had visited the stall earlier in the day walked past again and announced she had booked an appointment with her GP to receive the vaccine. Having taken the information provided and acted on it so quickly, she became. a striking example of the positive impact that face to face engagement can have. Sherrice Weekes, Project manager at NELCA reflected on the encounter and said " That has made my day, and I will include that comment in my presentation"
Moments like this highlight the importance of outreach: every conversation has the potential to inspire action, protect young people, and contribute to healthier communities.
