NELCA engages the community at the African and Caribbean Health Show 2025

The North East London Cancer Alliance team attended the African and Caribbean Health Show on 29th October 2025 in London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. They joined a wide range of health professionals and community partners in the Barking Learning Centre to champion prevention, early diagnosis, and equitable access to care.

The event was opened by Councillor Irma Freeborn, who delivered an impCouncillor Irma Freebornactful talk on the importance of prioritising health and making full use of the services available. Her remarks set a collaborative tone for the day. Throughout the day, attendees heard practical talks on healthy living, screening and early detection, and the support on offer within local communities- from GP practices to grassroot organisations and local charities.

At North East London Cancer Alliance's information stand, the team raised awareness of cancer services in north east London, answered questions, and signposted people to our resources. Many men in particular approached the stand to discuss prostate cancer, and some pointed out that they had friends who had been diagnosed and wanted to know how they can also be checked. Some were also prompted by Dr Jagan John's health talk session. The team directed visitors to the cancer alliance website and shared prostate cancer awareness cards outlining symptoms, risk factors, and how to seek advice.

Events like this are important to create safe and accessible spaces for honest conversations about cancer, particularly in communities where late presentation and poorer outcomes persists. For North East London Cancer Alliance, being present at events like this is crucial to building trust, tackling myths, encouraging earlier help seeking and ensuring people know exactly where to go for support.
