Community games get off and running in Mile End

The Community Games, hosted by North East London Cancer Alliance, provide free opportunities for people of all ages and abilities in north east London to try new sports and activities and are free to attend.

In particular, the aim is to get as many people as possible along who are living with cancer - and their families and friends - to help them recover from their cancer treatment and improve their quality of life.

The first ever Community Games in north east London took place on Sunday 8 June in a blustery and – at times – sunny setting at Mile End Leisure Centre.

A couple of young children are being given boxing lessons by some adults in a field on a sunny day.

Adults and kids took part in a range of activities in the centre of the Mile End Leisure Centre athletics track, which included boxing, netball, axe throwing, football and racket sports.

Also on offer was expert health advice and support – including about cancer signs and symptoms and screening programmes – from local health partners.

Sarita Yaganti, Programme Lead for Personalised Cancer Care at North East London Cancer Alliance said “These games not only bring together communities in a safe space to have fun and make new connections in their local area, they also provide invaluable opportunities to improve your health and fitness, and all for free!"

The next games take place in Haggerston on Saturday 28 June, and details are provided below.

Come along and try something new without pressure. Get moving, feel better, connect. 💚
