Black African and Caribbean community health event in Barking
North East London Cancer Alliance was delighted to take part in a fantastic health event for residents from Black African and Caribbean communities. The event took place on Thursday, 27 March, at Barking Learning Centre in Barking and Dagenham.
It was a day filled with energy, warmth, and positivity as hundreds of local residents made their way through Barking Library to the Learning Centre. The sun was shining, and the atmosphere inside was just as bright, with people coming together to learn, connect, and support each other.
The event had a vibrant and welcoming feel, with a DJ playing upbeat tunes, creating the perfect backdrop for people to meet, chat, and engage with healthcare professionals. It was a great opportunity to bring the community together with NHS partners, sparking important conversations that might not have happened otherwise.
North East London Cancer Alliance hosted an information stall, offering guidance on spotting the signs and symptoms of cancer and the importance of screening programmes. Over 50 people took the opportunity to talk about cancer, ask questions, and take home vital information for themselves and their loved ones.
Paul Thomas, Communications and Engagement Manager for the North East London Cancer Alliance, shared his thoughts on the event: “This kind of event is a fantastic, and possibly the most effective, way to raise awareness about cancer services and support. Hopefully, these conversations will continue at home, in workplaces, and among friends - because talking about cancer can help save lives.”
“Events like these play a crucial role in breaking down barriers, raising awareness, and ensuring that everyone has access to the information and support they need. If you’d like to learn more about cancer screening and early detection, reach out to your local NHS service and explore the information on our website - because early action can make all the difference.”
