Barking Community Games brings 140+ residents together to get active

Barking Sporthouse was alive with energy as more than 140 residents turned out for the third North East London Cancer Alliance (NELCA) Community Games, an event designed to help people of all ages and abilities discover fun, accessible ways to stay active.

The Community Games form part of a wider initiative to encourage physical activity among people living with and beyond cancer, as well as the wider community. The North East London Cancer Alliance partnered with Inspire Activity Ltd, whose long track record of organising successful community games made them a natural fit.

The focus was on removing barriers that can stop people getting active, whether that means feeling nervous, unfit, or unsure of where to start. The free programme welcomed all ages and abilities to try a range of sports in a safe, friendly setting, with multiple health stations offering practical advice and information - a true local showcase for activity and wellbeing.

Early outcomes and community feedback

On the day, on-site assessments led by Dr Jagon John identified three cancers, with urgent referrals made. Several additional attendees were also referred for further investigation. Many participants took immediate steps to keep the momentum going, with a number of attendees  signing up for gym memberships at the host venue, Barking Sporthouse.

Feedback described the Community Games as helpful, welcoming and motivating, and there was strong interest in seeing more events of this kind in the community.

For Sarita, Personalised Cancer Care Programme Lead at NELCA, the Barking Community Games was both a professional milestone and personal inspiration.

"The Barking Community Games for people living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis will definitely stay with me for a long time" she said. "The spirit of the event was absolutely magical, and i'm overwhelmed by the positive feedback from those who provided valuable advise and guidance around the importance of physical activity and health and wellbeing to the patients and resident who took the time to attend"

Alongside the physical activity stalls, health and wellbeing stations provided on the spot guidance on everything from nutrition to cancer screening and local support services. NELCA provided physical activity booklets to take home, making it easier to continue healthy habits beyond the event.

As part of the event’s lead-up, NELCA staff recorded video pledges, each committing to a single action, big or small to keep themselves physically active. This idea resonated strongly on the day itself. Attendees were invited to write their own pledges on display boards: promises to take daily walks, join local sports clubs, or simply add more movement to their routines.

Looking Ahead

NELCA plans to continue its series of Community Games across North East London, ensuring that residents living with and beyond cancer and the wider community, can access free, inclusive opportunities to stay active.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the people of Barking and Dagenham, whose enthusiasm and support turned an ordinary Saturday into a celebration of health, movement, and community spirit.
