We are pleased to report that the North East London Cancer Alliance has been shortlisted for two Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards. This was formally announced on Monday 14 August by the HSJ.

An oncology and radiotherapy team from Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust (BHRUT) has been shortlisted for the Ingrid Fuchs Cancer Nursing Award as a result of being the first trust in England to implement a virtual nurse led clinic using Noona.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis, making decisions, and coping with treatment can be all-consuming.  Many people focus on doing everything they can to get through each day, and complete treatments with the aim of being cured and putting “everything behind” them. 

We are sad to share the news that unfortunately Jay McLaughlin, who was one of our patient and carer representatives, has passed away peacefully at St Joseph’s Hospice at the age of 43.

The NHS has published the results of the 2022 Cancer Patient Experience Survey. Patient experience of care is incredibly important to us and it’s a testament to the hard-working NHS staff that cancer patients have given a rating of 8.88 out of 10 for overall experience.

Latest figures from NHS England and Improvement show that Barts Health has been reducing the backlog for treatment for urgent suspected cancer patients who have been waiting more than 62 days.

The ‘You Need to Know’ womb cancer awareness campaign, which is helping to save lives in north east London, has been recognised in The Lancet, a weekly peer-reviewed general medical journal and one of the oldest of its kind.

On Wednesday 5 July 2023, the 75th birthday of the NHS, the North East London Cancer Alliance brought together cancer staff from across north east London for a unique engagement event to look at how we can make positive changes to treatment and care for cancer patients.
