Cancer Awareness Day at Homerton Hospital
North East London Cancer Alliance joined the cancer team at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to support World Cancer Day and to help spread important life-saving information about cancer signs and symptoms and free screening programmes.
World Cancer Day took place on Sunday 4 February with the theme of #CloseTheCareGap and the cancer alliance ran a series of awareness events across north east London centred around this.
On Wednesday 7 February, the team set up an information stand in the busy and bustling reception area of Homerton hospital to speak to both patients and staff and to hand out important information.
Mary Flatley, Lead Nurse Cancer at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said “These events are really important as they give us a chance to speak to people directly about cancer.
“As well as helping us to encourage people to attend cancer screening and getting checked, it’s also a great opportunity for people to share their story with us so we can learn from their experience and help improve local services.”
Over the course of the day, we spoke to over 120 local people from a diverse range of backgrounds. Many came to speak to us to take away information for their family or friends, which is really encouraging as it means we are able to reach even more people through this work.
Raising awareness of cancer screening saves lives. There are three national cancer screening programmes:
You’ll be invited directly when it is your turn, and it is really important you follow the instructions on your invitation and take part. Please encourage family, friends and colleagues to do the same!
