Cancer awareness in the Charedi Jewish population

North East London Cancer Alliance is working on a cancer awareness project which supports our local Charedi Jewish community. The project provides funding to a local charity, Acheinu Cancer Support (ACS), to drive a programme of cancer awareness, engagement events and communications across north east London

We started work on this earlier in the year and progress is going really well. Key highlights so far are:

  • 100+ attendees at first engagement event in May focussing on gastric and urological cancers
  • 97% of attendees found it informative
  • Informative leaflets printed and distributed
  • 3 awareness advertisements in local publications catered to Jewish communities
  • Wellness checks to those families with a history of cancer scheduled for September
  • 20% increase in support queries relating to cancer awareness, concerns and prevention
  • 30% increase in early intervention queries and increased additional medical support

Caroline Cook, Early Diagnosis Programme Lead for North East London Cancer Alliance, says “Our priority as a cancer alliance is to reduce inequalities and ensure that everyone living in north east London has equal access to life-saving cancer information and services.

“Our experience shows that the most effective way of doing this is engaging directly with our local communities, understanding their concerns, and providing them with information that is tailored to their needs. This project is no exception. By working with a local specialist charity, we are able to really reach out to the Jewish community and support them in a way which has the most positive impact.”
