World Lung Cancer Day: Don't Ignore a Cough That Lasts Three Weeks or More
This World Lung Cancer Day (1 August 2026), North East London Cancer Alliance (NELCA) is supporting the NHS's Help Us, Help You campaign by encouraging people to be aware of the signs and symptoms of lung cancer and to seek help if something doesn't feel right.

When cancer is diagnosed early, treatment is more likely to be successful. However, awareness that a cough lasting three weeks or more could be a sign of lung cancer remains low. That's why we're encouraging anyone with a persistent cough not to ignore it and to contact their GP practice.
If you've had a cough for three weeks or more, it could be a warning sign of lung cancer.
It's probably nothing serious, but if it is cancer, finding it early makes it more treatable and can save lives. Your NHS wants to see you, so don't delay contacting your GP practice if you're concerned.
Other symptoms of lung cancer
In addition to a cough lasting three weeks or more, other symptoms of lung cancer include:
- Chest infections that keep coming back
- Coughing up blood
- A long-standing cough that gets worse
- An ache or pain when breathing or coughing
- Persistent breathlessness
- Persistent tiredness or lack of energy
- Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss
Having one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have cancer, but it's important to get them checked by your GP practice.
