Raising cancer awareness at the African and Caribbean Health Show in Barking
North East London Cancer Alliance (NELCA) attended the African and Caribbean Health Show at Barking Learning Centre, engaging with local residents to raise awareness of cancer screening, early detection and the cancer services available across north east London.
The event provided an opportunity for the team to connect with members of the community, share trusted cancer information and encourage conversations about the importance of looking after our health.

Promoting cancer screening and early detection
With October marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the team spoke with residents about breast cancer screening, highlighting the importance of attending screening appointments when invited.
Conversations also focused on bowel cancer screening, encouraging eligible residents to take part in the NHS screening programme and raising awareness of the importance of detecting cancer early.
The team was also able to share information about the wider cancer services and support available across north east London, helping residents understand where to turn for further advice and guidance.

Keeping the conversation going
Community events such as the African and Caribbean Health Show play an important role in creating opportunities for open conversations about cancer.
By engaging directly with residents, NELCA can help raise awareness, address common concerns and encourage people to take proactive steps towards their health.
These conversations are particularly valuable in helping to reach communities that may experience barriers to accessing healthcare information and services.
NELCA remains committed to working with local communities and partner organisations to improve cancer awareness, promote screening participation and support earlier diagnosis across north east London.
