NELCA Supports Health & Humanity Community Wellness Event

On 30 July, the North East London Cancer Alliance (NELCA) was invited to host an information stall at the Health & Humanity event, held at Barking Learning Centre as part of its monthly community wellness programme.

The event brought together a range of local organisations with a shared aim of tackling health inequalities and providing support to people experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable members of the community. Alongside information stalls, attendees were able to enjoy a buffet lunch and connect with local services in a welcoming and supportive environment. 

Throughout the event, NELCA had a number of meaningful conversations with attendees about the cancer screening programmes available to them, helping to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis. There was particular interest in prostate cancer, especially after discussing the increased risk among Black men.

One conversation stood out, with an attendee explaining that he was about to go on a boys' trip and would like to take prostate cancer awareness leaflets with him to share with his friends. He said he had been surprised to learn about the statistics, particularly the higher risk for Black men, and wanted to help spread awareness within his community.

Events such as these provide valuable opportunities to engage with local communities, break down barriers to conversations about cancer, and ensure people have access to the information and support they need to make informed decisions about their health.
