2024 National Cancer Patient Experience Survey Results: Progress in Patient-Centered Cancer Care
The results of the 2024 National Cancer Patient Experience Survey (NCPES) have been published, offering a detailed snapshot of how people across England experience cancer care. In North East London, the findings provide valuable insight into what matters most to patients and how services are delivering on that promise.
The annual survey, conducted by Picker Institute Europe on behalf of NHS England, collected feedback from more than 64,000 cancer patients nationally. Patients were asked about their experience throughout the entire cancer pathway from diagnosis and treatment to aftercare and life beyond cancer. Their responses are essential in shaping service improvements and strengthening the way care is delivered.
Listening to Patients to Improve Care
In North East London, more than 1,100 patients shared their experiences through the survey. Their voices are helping to guide local improvements and inform the work of the North East London Cancer Alliance.
The survey explores key aspects of care, including communication, hospital experience, treatment information, coordination with GPs, and emotional and practical support. It also provides valuable insight into how different communities across age, ethnicity, and health backgrounds experience cancer services, helping ensure that care is inclusive, responsive, and accessible to everyone.
Strong Results for North East London
Patients in North East London reported a positive overall experience of care. This reflects the continued dedication of healthcare professionals working across hospitals, GP practices, and community services.
Key findings from North East London:
- 8.7 out of 10 average rating for overall care experience
- 89% of patients felt their care team worked well together
- 86% rated the administration of their care as good or very good
These results highlight the impact of teamwork, coordination, and compassionate communication throughout the cancer care pathway.
Encouraging Improvements
This year’s results also show clear improvements in several important areas of patient experience:
- More support for family members and carers involved in care discussions
- Greater access to information on financial help and practical support
- Higher satisfaction with wellbeing support during treatment
These improvements demonstrate a continued focus on person centred care that supports both patients and those around them.
While the survey results are encouraging, NHS England acknowledges there are areas needing improvement, including communication after discharge. This honest feedback is crucial to guide the Cancer Experience of Care Improvement Collaborative (CIC), a nationwide programme working with patients to co-design meaningful service improvements.
