Capsule Sponge Programme
About the Capsule Sponge Test name
The Capsule Sponge test was previously known as the Cytosponge™. while the name has changes, the test itself remains a simple, minimally invasive procedure designed to help identify changes in the lining of the oesophageal (food pipe), including conditions such as Barrett's oesophagus, which can increase the risk of oesophageal cancer.
The Capsule Sponge works by collecting a small sample of cells from the oesophagus, which are then analysed in a laboratory. The test can often be carried out in a community setting and does not usually require a hospital endoscopy.
If you have heard the test refered to as Cytosponge™ in the past, please be aware that this is the same procedure now known as the Capsule Sponge test.
