Oesophageal cancer is more treatable when detected early. We are offering a free, simple test to help identify early changes before symptoms become more serious.

Who is this for?

You may be eligible if you: 

Are aged 50 or over and Experience any of the following:

  • Persistent heartburn or indigestion 
  • Burning sensation in the chest
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth 

These symptoms are common but can sometimes be linked to more serious conditions. 

About the Test

The Capsule Sponge test is: 

  • Quick (takes around 10 minutes) 
  • Non- Invasive (no endoscopy or sedation required) 
  • Safe and clinically approved

It works by collecting cells from the oesophagus to check for early changes. 

Why take the test?

  • Helps detect changes early
  • Can prevent more serious illness
  • Provides reassurance if results are normal

Most people tested do not have anything serious.

How to Get Tested

You can check if you are eligible by:

Where will the test take place? 

Tests are carried out at: 

Barking Community Diagnostic Centre, Upney Lane Barking, Essex, IG11 9LX

What happens next?

  • If eligible, you will be offered an appointment
  • The test is completed in a single visit 
  • Results are usually available within 1-2 weeks

Understanding your results

Most common outcomes: 

  • Normal (no further action needed) 
  • Reflux or inflammation (managed by your GP)
  • Minor changes (Monitoring or advice) 
  • Further investigation needed (Referral to specialist team) 

You will always be informed clearly about what your results mean and what happens next.

This programme uses targeted outreach to reach people who may benefit most from early testing. 

We work with GP practices and community services to provide direct access to screening through a simple self- referral pathway.

The programme is currently being rolled out across Barking and Dagenham, with plans for wider expansion across North East London.
